Sheriff William Southerland

Born about 1670-1680.
Probably died in or around King & Queen County, VA.
Earliest known record is 1694.
Latest known record is 1720.

May have immigrated from Kinminitie, Scotland to Virginia.

Alternately, he may have been born in Virginia, if his father was the one who immigrated. Dallas Herring wrote a treatise on an Alexander Southerland who arrived "bound headright" in York County, VA by November 1, 1654 to work a 2000 acre plantation. This Alexander was probably in his twenties or thirties, possibly born about 1620, and is believed to have had four sons: George, John, William, and Daniel.

Jamestown was established in 1607.
Charles River Shire was formed in 1634 as one of the eight original shires of the Virginia Colony.
Charles River Shire was renamed York County during the English Civil War (1642-1651).
New Kent County was formed from York County in 1654.
King and Queen was formed from New Kent in 1691.
King William County formed from King and Queen County in 1702.

From the will of Robert Bird I of King and Queen County, dated July 17, 1694:
"Item - I give and bequeath to my said son William Bird all the land and plantations, whereon William Southerland and Patrick Shea now liveth being by patent one hundred acres and I know it to be my just right although hitherto am bottled out of it."
(His son, Robert Bird, was Sheriff of King and Queen County in 1705, died 1712)

"William Southerland, of King William County, gave bond in Essex County Court, February 11, 1700, as guardian of Eliza Covington, orphan of Thomas Covington (Essex County Records, Deeds, Wills, etc., 1699-1702, page 67)." ["Winston of Virginia, and allied families" by Clayton Torrence, Whittet & Shepperson, 1927]

In 1704, William Southerland appeared on a Quit Rent Roll for 800 acres in King and Queen County.

Was in the commission of justices for King William County in 1714.

"1714 - William Southerland was member of Quorum (Court)" ["Sutherland records: found in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia" by Henry C. Sutherland, 1968]

"William Southerland was sheriff of the County of King and Queen in November, 1720 (Journals of the House of Burgesses, 1712-26, pages 262 and 269). In June, 1722, Essex County Court directed Captain William Southerland and others to ..."["Winston of Virginia, and allied families" by Clayton Torrence, Whittet & Shepperson, 1927]

Was referred to as the "Sherif of King and Queen County" on November 8, 10, and 14, 1720.["Journals of the House of Burgesses of Virginia, 1712-1714, 1715, 1718, 1720 ...", Virginia State Library]

Have you seen the Sutherland history, "From Whence We Came" by James Sutherland? He makes some references as follows: "Dallas Herring of Rose Hill, N.C. has made available an excerpt from Caithness Family History by John Henderson, concerning "The Sutherlands of Force" where Major Alexander Sutherland is shown as the son of James and his wife, Janet (Gordon) Sutherland. Major Alexander Sutherland is shown as from Earnside in 1641. He married Jean Campbell, no issue shown. Set forth below is the pertinent part of this account... Major Alexander, who, according to a MS pedigree in the possession of General Pope, is mentioned as of Earnside in 1641, as having sold it in 1643, and as having married Jean Campbell... Dallas Herring, a genealogist of note, who has done considerable research into the Sutherland lineage, made the following interesting comments concerning Major Alexander Sutherland of Forse.
"The career of Major Alexander Sutherland of the Forse family, cited on page 156 of Caithness Family History, is of interest because of the possibility that was the Alexander Sutherland who settled in York County, Virginia, not later than 1654, when Francis Hamon was granted 2000 acres in that county for having transported forty persons including Alexander Southerland.
"There is no proof, so far as we have been able to discover, that he came to America, but it is established now that he lost his Earnside estate in Caithness in 1643. He seems then to disappear from the record in Scotland. If he did not leave Scotland, it was not for lack of a reason to depart, as will be seen in the following interesting report by John R. Sutherland of Rock Island, Illinois, genealogist of the Clan Sutherland Society of North American, who undertook to examine the records in the Register of the Privy Seal of Scotland on a visit to Scotland in 1980..."

The first mention I can find of Southerlins is John in James City Co. in 1623, Alex Southerland in York Co. in 1654, and Gilbert Southerland in 1655.
