Baldwin Halsey
My grandfather's grandfather was Baldwin Halsey Hunnings from Tyrrell county, NC. I have placed Baldwin Woods Halsey in Tyrrell County in the early 1800's, from an apprenticeship list for that county. I know that his brother, Joseph, was the town clerk for years there.
Thank you so much for this information---it really helps me put this fellow in a certain geographical area...I show him on the apprenticeship bonds for Tyrrell County, NC in 1810-11, listing his occupation as seaman. I had tried to keep up with his family and records, but could not find anywhere it listed his burial. I figured he might have been buried at sea.

Florence Loomis Bohlayer
From Aunt Marilyn:
Hello Cousins,
Mom passed away about 10 PM our time. We are waiting for Hospice to come
make it official. She had been semi-conscious since the weekend and her
passing was peaceful. That was what we had been praying for - for her to
be free of pain and fear. Will update you with more information when we
get the arrangements made.
Love,
Marilyn
Florence Loomis Bohlayer Obit
On October 7, 2008 Florence Loomis Bohlayer, 90, of Farmer’s Valley, Troy, died peacefully at home and went to be with her Lord. Florence was born October 31, 1917 near East Troy, PA to Reid and Fanny Parke Loomis. After graduating from Troy High School in 1935, she worked at the former McClelland store in Troy. On June 19, 1943 she married John F. Bohlayer and worked with him on the family farm, Bohlayer’s Orchard. They had two daughters, Martha Copp of Corning, NY and Marilyn Bohlayer of Troy. In 1976 John and Florence retired; John passed away May 7, 1982 after nearly 40 years of marriage. A faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Troy since 1944, she taught Sunday School, served on the Board of Deacons, and was active with the American Baptist Women’s Ministry. Florence was also a member of the Thursday Study Club and had participated in the Troy Tuesday Bridge Club.
Surviving are: her daughters; granddaughter Lisa (Michael) Zahradka, Painted Post, NY; grandson Shawn Copp, Corning, NY; great-grandchildren Kyle, Cachet, and Anna Zahradka and Katherine Copp; sister Loretta Billingsley, Florence, AZ; local nieces Cynthia (James) Eckert, Troy and Eleanor Loomis, Troy.
As well as her parents and husband, Florence was predeceased by: brothers Luther, Lucien, Charles, and Ellsworth and local brother and sister-in-law Arthur and Dorothy Bohlayer Loomis; son-in-law Lynn Copp; local nephew David Loomis Sr.
Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 PM Friday October 10, 2008 at the Gerald W. Vickery Funeral Home, Inc, 110 West Main St., Troy, Pa. or from 1 to 2 PM on Saturday October 11, 2008 at the First Baptist Church of Troy, 162 Canton St., Troy. Immediately following at 2 PM a memorial service celebrating Florence’s life will be held at the church with Rev. Garry Zuber, her beloved pastor, officiating. Interment will be at Glenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Florence’s memory be directed to the First Baptist Church of Troy Memorial Fund, 162 Canton St., Troy PA or charity of their choice.

Camden County
(from Gary)
Your grandad said his parents went to north carolina to get married because it was easier; probably got married by a justice of the peace. South Mills was the first place in NC they would have come to on highway 17 south, the main road south out of Portsmouth, Va.

Galvanized Yankees
refer to former Confederate prisoners of war who had sworn allegiance
to the Union. Due to doubts about their ultimate loyalty, Galvanized
Yankees were generally assigned to garrison forts far from the Civil
War battlefields or in action against American Indians in the west.
Regiments made up of "Galvanized Yankees"
1st U.S. Volunteer Infantry
Organized at Point Lookout, Md., January 21 to April 22, 1864. Moved
to Norfolk, Va., and provost duty there and at Portsmouth, Va.,
District of Eastern Virginia, Dept. of Virginia and North Carolina, to
August, 1864. Ordered to Milwaukee, Wis., thence to St. Louis, Mo.,
arriving there August 22. (4 Cos. remained in Wisconsin till
September, then ordered to Minnesota.) Six Companies moved from St.
Louis to Fort Rice, Dakota Territory, arriving there October 17, and
garrison duty there; at Fort Berthold and at Fort Union, mouth of the
Yellowstone, till October, 1865. Moved to St. Louis, Mo., and mustered
out November 27, 1865. Four Companies on duty in District of Minnesota
till May, 1866. Mustered out May 21, 1866.
